Comfort of the Tours

We aim to give you your holiday of a lifetime. What you see and experience during your tour is important, having a luxury hotel every day isn’t. Having said that, most days you will sleep in comfortable small-scale hotels, lodges or guest houses, comparable to three star accommodations in Europe. Almost all accommodations have a swimming pool. Your room either has a private bathroom or you sleep in a chalet with two bedrooms with one bathroom per chalet. A couple of times you’ll use more basic accommodations, for instance in the Karoo or the Okavango Delta. However the atmosphere, surroundings and whole experience will make you include these overnights in the highlights of your tour!

The Roads

During daytime the roads largely determine your comfort. In southern Africa these are generally good. On tarred roads potholes are generally few and far between. Speed bumps (‘sleeping policemen’) are encountered at almost all build up areas; these are both higher and steeper then you are used to and absolutely not comfortable.
If you do a tour which incorporates gravel roads: these are generally good, but some stretches of corrugation, loose sand and deep tracks are unavoidable. Riding these stretches won’t be comfortable! Also keep in mind all roads can be very dusty.

The Food

We are bikers ourselves so we know that your comfort is only partially determined by the roads and overnights, and largely by your food and drink. You won’t loose weight during our tours! On the menu you will even encounter game, like Ostrich, Kudu, Springbok, Oryx and even Crocodile. Most lodges and guest houses serve breakfast and dinner as a buffet; in the towns you can eat a la carte in a regular restaurant. A salad is normally provided with your dinner. Vegetarian food is served everywhere, but the choice in dishes is often limited.

The Bars

Naturally we made sure that all our overnight stays have a bar, or a bar is within walking distance! Because really relaxing only starts when you have a cold beer in your hand and don’t have to worry about riding afterwards. It sounds logical, but most organizations overlook this simple fact. Most accommodations have a terrace or a ‘lapa’, where a campfire is lit in the evening. If a place does not have a bar we make our own: if necessary we bring our own booze. Beer, wine and sodas  are widely available at very reasonable prices; most places also offer stronger liquids, but these cost considerably more.
