Namibia to Botswana

Wildlife and waterfalls

The Okavango Delta, Victoria Falls, Kalahari and Etosha game reserve: you’ll visit all these and more during this motorbike tour! During the day you ride tarred roads to the most beautiful spots of Namibia and Botswana and at night you sleep in carefully selected hotels, lodges and guesthouses. The moment you leave Windhoek you’ll experience the solitude of the Kalahari Desert. Your first encounter with the rich wildlife will take place on a cheetah farm. Your ride then takes you to the Okavango Delta in the middle of Botswana’s desert. Your comfortable tented camp is your base to explore the Delta and close-by Moremi game reserve. Next up is the ‘smoke that thunders’, the imposing Victoria Waterfalls. In Chobe wildlife reserve you’ll board a boat to go looking for hippos, crocs and elephants. Etosha national park is the perfect place for a game drive to find lions, giraffes, rhinos and antelopes. This magnificent motorbike safari is suitable for all riders and perfectly suited to ride with a pillion.

  • Very suitable for rider with a pillion; if you want to skip a day on the backseat you can ride with the backup vehicle.
  • Almost all meals included as indicated at each day with B (breakfast), L (lunch) and/or D (dinner)

Day 8: the Smoke that Thunders

Full day excursion to Victoria waterfalls – B, D // Early in the morning our Zimbabwean colleagues will pick you up and take you across the border into Zimbabwe. From far you can see mist rising above the landscape from the Victoria Falls. This is what gave them their local name: Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Smoke that Thunders. You’ll have ample time to admire this natural wonder. Walk along the edge of the gorge into which the waterfalls drop, take a flight high above the falls and lunch in cosy Vic Falls. At the end of a long day you return to your lodge in Kasane, Botswana.

Day 9: the green strip

380 km tar, B, L, D // You ride across a corner of Chobe to the border with Namibia. Maybe you’ll spot some more game before crossing the border. The road continues through the Caprivi Strip, very different from the desert you have mostly seen till now. With a bit of luck you will catch glimpses of a bushbuck, a kudu or an elephant. From the sundeck at the edge of the Okavango River you will see this river turning orange from the light of the setting sun.

Day 10: African villages and towns

370 km tar – B, L, D // As the day goes on you’ll see more and more traffic on the road. The distance between villages gets shorter and shorter. All signs you are nearing one of the more densely populated areas of Namibia. You’ll sleep in Grootfontein, a typical African town that looks like a busy city compared to the emptiness of the last week.

Day 11: farms and wild animals

430 km tar – B, L, D // At Tsumeb you leave the last of the villages and towns behind you and ride through a fertile area with large farms. As the day goes on the desert starts taking over again and you’ll start spotting springbokkies, a first sign of the rich wildlife you’ll encounter tomorrow. At the end of the day you’ll arrive at our cosy guesthouse outside Etosha N.P.

Day 12: big game safari in Etosha

Game drive – B, D // Early in the morning you board the safari vehicle for your full-day game drive. Etosha is home to the largest population of both black as well as white rhino in the whole of Africa. Did you know a white rhino is just as grey as a black rhino? You’ll also see many giraffes, kudus, gazelles and other antelopes. You’re also at risk to encounter predators like lions, cheetahs, leopards, jackals and hyenas. Most animals are active in the morning and at the end of the day. The warmest time of the day is for resting, an excellent example which we will follow.

Day 13: leave the wilderness behind you

405 km tar – B, L, D // Your last day on the motorbike! You ride a good tarred road into Windhoek and the civilised world. The busy traffic makes you realise how far you have been from civilization the last weeks. Fortunately civilisation has its advantages, like ice-cold beers, terraces and a scrumptious dinner in a nice restaurant.

Day 14: goodbye, or more Namibia or Cape Town?

Airport transfer – B // Too soon the time has come to say goodbye! Depending on your departure time we will transfer you solo or together with others to the airport. If you fly via Cape Town, you might want to make a stopover on the way back and spend some additional time in Cape Town. Cape of Good Hope, a wine tour, Robben Island or shark cage diving – Cape Town awaits you.

Add-ons to your tour

See the best southern Africa has to offer in two weeks? Yes, you can. We would love to have your for months so we can submerge you in all the beauty you can experience here, but that is not possible. But give us two weeks of your life and we will let you experience what real emptiness is, show you Africa’s wildlife, meet the nicest people and bring you to the best towns and villages. We will also take you to the most memorable places to lunch, hotels and guesthouses. But give us a couple of days extra and we will also show you those places that are not in our motorcycle tour itineraries!

Swakopmund and Sossusvlei

If you do the wildlife and waterfalls tour you will miss out on two of Namibia’s most spectacular sights: Swakopmund and the dunes of Sossusvlei. Because these can only be reached on untarred roads a minibus is used for this program. The add-on is a three day tour. Swakopmund is situated on the ocean and is the perfect base for all kinds of activities like quad biking in the dunes etc. At Sossusvlei you can climb the highest dunes of Africa and make a walk to the spectacular Dead Vlei.

Itinerary

The last day of the regular tour, day 14, you leave early morning to go to Swakopmund. Upon arrival you have time for yourself; you can go for instance quad biking. The next day you discover the magnificent desert landscape on the road to Sossusvlei. Your first stop is for apple pie in Solitaire and your next for a walk with Boesman, who will show you how much life you can find in the seemingly dead desert. Day 16 starts off with a visit to the famous dunes. After visiting Sesriem Canyon you return to Windhoek where you arrive early evening. The next day, day 17, we transfer you to the airport. Do you fly via Cape Town? Why not add-on there as well.

What’s included?

All transport and transfers, 3 nights accommodation, all meals, entrance fees, non-alcoholic drinks and a local driver/guide are included. All other costs and activities are not included. Bookings are based on 2 persons sharing a room with private facilities. This extension can run if we have at least 4 participants. If you book with less persons it depends on other bookings whether we can run it or not. If not, we contact you to discuss possibilities and try to offer you a satisfactory alternative – or a full refund.

Cape Town

Africa’s most beautiful town! Table Mountain towering over the city, the many terraces and its vibrant atmosphere are reason enough to stay longer. Add the many sights to this and you have the perfect recipe for an unforgettable time. You can plan each day the way you want to, but we have two tips for you. Check each morning whether Table Mountain is free of clouds. If so, go straight to the cable station, because this does not occur every day. Secondly: do you want to go to Robbeneiland? If so, buy your tickets online as early as possible since the boats are regularly fully booked.

Windhoek

In the middle of a dry desert lies the mundane town Windhoek, littered with remnants of its German colonial past. Not just in buildings, but also in traditions like the ‘rheinheitsgebot’ for brewing beer and the tasty German ‘tortes’ in its konditoreis. Use it as your base for further exploring Namibia. Of stay for a couple of relaxed days before you get back to the rat-race back home.

What’s included?

With both add-ons the airport transfers and a cosy middle class guesthouse downtown are included. You book a double or twin room, so 2 persons sharing, with private facilities and including breakfast. Single room supplements do apply upon request and all other costs and activities are for your own account.

How do you book an add-on?

You can book your add-on either before or after your tour. The prices are included in the ‘dates and prices’ page. When booking use the ‘remarks’ field to tell us where, how many nights and with how many people you want to book your extension. On the booking confirmation we send you, your add-on will also be confirmed. Have you already booked your tour and want to make an additional booking for an add-on? We will be happy to help you. Just send us an e-mail with your wishes and we will make it happen.
