Who are we?
Ride2Roam is a family run business. Our farm is located in the beautiful Elgin Valley near Grabouw, around 80 km’s northwest of Cape Town. This is where, as Zulu Overland, we started in 1999 with overland tours. We now have several trucks, backup vehicles and 10-seat land cruisers. We also put up tented camps, Bedouin tents for parties and weddings and have a catering service. We use a fleet of motorbikes, consisting primarily of BMW GS 750’s and GS 1250’s, though we can offer other makes and models as well. You see our vehicles all over South-Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe – and recently even in Angola. We get most of our business through word of mouth. Our future plans are not geared towards unlimited growth, but towards maintaining our current high standard and to keep our customers always happy. Because we believe that is the only way we can continue sharing our love and passion for our tours and our country with you!
Tour Guide and co-founder
… grew up in the house of a missionary. His father was stationed in the Noordkaap, Vrijstaat, Koue Bokkeveld, Malawi and Mozambique. He studied agriculture and then became a Biology teacher for five years. While teaching he became involved in the outdoor education and was for two years nominated as one of the top ten teachers in outdoor education of the organization in South Africa. He was also heavily involved in off shore fishing and was a host skipper for the tuna nationals and other competitions for eight years. Came to the farm in 1990 but also got involved with charity work. The overland business was born in 1999 because of this passion to share nature and friends with other people. His knowledge of Namibia was through his involvement in the war there in the early eighties and having done more than thirty trips through Namibia even before the overland business was started. Anybody who has been on a tour with, or have just met him, will be aware of his love for pleasing people.
Maryke co-founded Ride2Roam. She sadly passed away in 2018. We still miss her!
Henko & Berna
Marketing, Social Media and Client Relations, co-founders
… take care of the marketing, social media and handle all your queries, questions and special requests for the motorbike tours. Born in the Philippines and with a childhood in Ecuador, traveling is something Henko literally grew up with. Educated as a landscape architect, Henko spend subsequently 10 years as a tour guide all over the world. He then exchanged guiding for working in the office of the same travel company. The last years he worked as Brand manager and as such was responsible for all content and results of the company’s tours and marketing strategy. Passion, a well-thought out, sustainable company strategy and commercial results all joined forces in Henko’s philosophy. He was for instance the instigator of integrating sustainability into the travel company. Together with Berna he has now exchanged his old job for his passions: South-Africa and riding a motorbike.
Just like Henko, Berna is a well-balanced combination of slight eccentricity, passion and a practical, targeted way of handing things. She grew up in The Hague and worked there for 10 years with disordered children. During that time she got a degree in management. Having traveled one year through Africa on her own she made up her mind: exchange her old job for being a tour guide so she could share the beauty of this magnificent continent with others. Southern Africa between Cape Town and Vic Falls has become her second home, so much so that it seems only natural to move and work there.
